Despite ground improvement festivities high flying Granville Rage were brought down to earth when the Rangers came to town. After going down to 10-men in the 10th minute the Rage struggled to overcome an envigorated Mt Druitt Town, with the final scoreline a fair 1-2.
Rage had done exceptionally well so far this season, two wins and a draw from their three games, and fancied their chances against a Mount Druitt side who have struggled thus far. But the Rangers were also quietly confident after having staged a fine comeback against the Students last Sunday, though the continuing absence through injury of Captain Ryan O'Shea was a dampener.
Granville started strongly and had Rangers back-peddling, with David Harding, Phllip Pyliotis, and Nenos Bobo all creating chances that failed to test the 'keeper. In return a long speculator by Rangers caught the rage 'keeper well off his line and he dropped it only to gather easily.
Disaster for Rage in the 10th minute when star Nenos Bobo was issued a straight red card, for what looked like an over the ball, two legged challenge.
Mt Druitt Town struggled to take advantage off the extra man, though at least the overwhelming pressure was eased. Then in the 28th minute Nathan Rivera missed a penalty, with the soft shot being picked out by the 'keeper. This seemed to infuse confidence in the visitors, with a series of good chances created by some newly crafted wide-play.
Town struck twice just before half-time to cement their advantage. They won a free-kick just outside of the area on the right, and the ball was curled in and Rafid Hirmiz rose to head it in. 0-1
As stoppage time was almost spent, Wiltar Jajaw received down the right, cut inside, and continued to jockey the defenders as they eyed a man entering the area from the left. Jajaw instead swung the ball inside the left upright, to make it 0-2
The started more evenly, and then Rangers numercial advantage was erased with the send-off of Michael Noro in the 53rd minute.
Three minutes later the goal advantage narrowed when rage were awarded another penalty, for a soft challenge on Kris Holbrook. Pasqualino Cappuccio stepped up and slotted it away.
The rest of the half was even, with both teams starting to get frustrated by their lack of headway, and the number of late yellow cards started adding to the stack there already with the 2 reds.
The victory was still dissapointing for Granville, with their celebrations muted. Two key players down next week for the game versus St George added to their dismay. For Mt Druitt Town of course this was huge, lifting them away from the bottom of the table, and their victory song rang out over the speedway noise from up the road.
Through the efforts of Parramatta City Council and the occupants of the field, Granville Rage Football Club, F.S. Garside Park has been brought back to modern standards of basic facilities at least. Records going back to the beginning of the 20th C abound on Macarthur Park on Parramatta Road in Granville, which became F.S.Garside Park in the late 70s in honour of the legendary football administrator - the ground has had a tradition of elite-level football that continues to this day. Until now, though, many of the amenities dated back to the origins of the field.
