Last placed Central Coast Lightning grabbed a much needed win after overcoming a sluggish start to defeat Mt Druitt Town Rangers 2-1 on Monday and complete Super League Round 6.
The Rangers started with confidence, putting immediate pressure on the Lightning defence but was largely inneffective in creating real chances despite their general dominance.
The visitors were relying on quick breaks when they could. In the 12th minute Coast's Keenan Crum made a run down the left but it ended with home going down under the close attention of three defenders, and his 'why-not' penalty claim went unheeded.
Slowly the Coast came into the game. Town's best chance of the half came in the 35th minute Greg Kondek was played in on the right, made for the line, and his cross was pinpoint, met by Eddie Georges - who proceeded to blast it over!
In the 41st minute Wold Jajaw claimed a penalty but this one had even less to support it. Just before half time the Mt Druitt 'keeper was forced to rise and one-handed tip a shot over the bar.
Within two minutes of the re-start Central Coast were one up. Brady Smith, who had come on in the first half for Nathan Byrn, slammed the ball past the Rangers 'keeper. 0-1
After Georges had again wasted an opportunity, blasting over the crossbar, the visitors came into their own. The ball was played smartly through to Brady Smith on the right and after rounding his defender wide, eh sent a searing cross over that was met by his captain Jamie Lobb. Lobb slammed it in! 0-2
The Coast seemed to find energy into their legs that had evaded them earlier, but wasted several opportunities through Smith and others to wrap it up.
Mt Druitt got one back in the 80th minute when the Coast failed several times to clear and eventually substitute Michael Noro had time to steer the ball past Lightning custodian Josh Barrett. 1-2
It was a game that didn't reach great heights and had an inordinate number of injuries, though it wasn't a particularly tough or spiteful game. The Coast certainly were happy with their first win, moving them off the bottom, ahead of Fraser Park on goal difference.
